How to Blanch Almonds
Blanched almonds can be really hard to find in a grocery store, or prohibitively expensive. That’s a bunch of crap. Unless you need TONS of them (like 5 lbs), I recommend blanching them at your house, in your free time.
Unlike some nuts (I’m looking at you, hazelnuts), almonds are really easy to peel. This won’t take you more than a few minutes. Here’s how to do it.
What You Need:
- Almonds, raw
- Small pot water
- Slotted Spoon
- Metal bowl
- Ice
- Paper towel
1. Bring pot of water to a boil. Drop almonds into boiling water, and let boil for about 1 minute.
2. Fill up metal bowl with ice, and some cold water. Using slotted spoon, promptly remove almonds from boiling water, and shock in metal bowl with ice water. This will stop the almonds from over-cooking and getting mushy.
4. After another minute, drain almonds of water, then pour out onto paper towel.
5. Using fingers, squeeze each almond to release it from it’s skin. It should come off very easily, and sort of be a fun time.
6. Ta daaaa! Blanched almond. You did it. You’re a miracle.
